Boys' Junior School at Beardwood House

Single-sex education for boys aged 7 - 11

Welcome from the Head

Established in 2003, the Junior Boys’ School was borne out of parental demand. Parents of boys did not want them to leave Westholme, so when the opportunity came to purchase Beardwood House, next door to Beardwood Bank where the Junior Girls are taught, we jumped at it. The School has never looked back. Each year we have a full form of boys coming through, creating a vibrant community where talents are cherished and confidence is fostered.

The boys form a close bond with their class teacher, who is their main source of support and teaching. There are various specialist teachers in addition, allowing the boys to master French, Music and Swimming under the guidance of experts. The curriculum is broad, stretching and follows national guidelines. Frequently we make trips to supplement the learning programme and bring topics to life, for example the annual visit to Roman Chester, complete with dressing up and enactments! We also offer Additional Learning Support, so those very bright boys can be challenged further and equally those with more need of a helping hand do not struggle. Despite increased academic challenges, there is plenty of time for the boys to follow their own pursuits and develop new skills. Clubs are popular, particularly the ones based on sports and music. Every year the boys perform well in local and national competitions for swimming, cross country, football, cricket and rugby and athletics, sometimes in conjunction with the Junior School for Girls, with whom we have excellent links. There are a number of shared activities with the girls, including WISPA (Westholme Inter Schools’ Performing Arts) which the boys and girls may join in Year 4. This builds teamwork and public speaking skills as the pupils join together to create a superb performance each summer in the Westholme Theatre.

Fresh air activities are an intrinsic part of Westholme Boys’ School life and include an outdoor pursuits  programme at Patterdale Hall in the Lake District. >From Year 4 boys enjoy residential visits and have the opportunity to try rock climbing, gorge walking, sailing, canoeing and kayaking, with Year 6 boys having the excitement of an overnight camp. We put a great focus on their physical, mental and academic growth, with the aim of creating well-rounded individuals. The boys leave the Junior School fully prepared for the rigours of Senior School, comfortable in their own skins and ready for a new challenge. Westholme boys stand out by virtue of their impeccable manners, composure and enthusiasm for life. We look forward to them joining us at Senior School!
