Teaching at Westholme

Colleagues new to Westholme will find themselves warmly welcomed to the staff room.
As in most schools nowadays, the pace can be hectic so we regard it as very important that the needs of new staff are not overlooked. Westholme has its fair share of traditions and customs; these may seem entirely obvious to those of us who have taken part in them for a number of years but they can be baffling for a newcomer. For these reasons all new colleagues are assigned a staff "buddy" for the first year. This teacher, who will work in another department, will have at least one years experience at Westholme and will be on hand to help with any queries and also to anticipate the things a new colleague will need to know.

For Newly Qualified Teachers, Westholme offers the Induction Year. NQTs work closely with their Head of Department as well as with one of the Deputy Heads. At Billinge House and Beardwood Bank, training will be with the Headteacher. The Induction Year is not seen just as a requirement for qualification; it is regarded as an opportunity to lay the foundations of a successful career, at Westholme and beyond.

Westholme is a provider for Initial Teacher Training, in partnership with St Martins College, Lancaster and the schools commitment to professional development extends to all colleagues at all levels of experience. In recent years, staff have done a variety of training, including the NPQH, an MA in education, ICT training, as well as courses aimed at keeping staff up to date with their own subject or area of interest. There is a saying that the best teachers are also the best learners. This is recognized at Westholme where the guiding principle is to offer the highest standards of education to all pupils.

The quality of teaching and the commitment of staff to Westholme has always been recognized by the Governing Body. One element of this recognition is The Westholme Allowance. There are similarities between this and the State sectors Threshold Allowance. The Westholme award is worth 2000 and it will be given to teachers with a proven track record for teaching at Westholme and a commitment to the many extra curricular activities which contribute to the positive ethos of the School. All teaching staff with two years service at Westholme may apply for the Allowance.

The atmosphere in the staff room is similarly positive. Everywhere there is commitment to the school with most colleagues involved in extra curricular activities. There is an elected staff council which supports all members of the staff room and arranges some social events. In general colleagues enjoy one anothers company. Of course, it helps to be a Blackburn Rovers supporter, but it is not compulsory.
