Chemistry
The study of Chemistry opens our eyes to the composition of the world around us. At Westholme we aim to inspire every pupil’s interest in the chemical substances encountered in day to day life. We have modern and well equipped laboratories and from the moment pupils arrive we place a strong emphasis on class practical work.
Our Key Stage 3 curriculum provides a clear foundation for pupils as they build up their understanding of chemical behaviour through their own experimental observations and experiences. As the concepts covered develop in complexity at Key Stage 4 and 5 pupils continue to test and develop their own ideas, conducting investigations and researching the wider issues surrounding the application of many important chemical principles. These include how to combat dwindling natural mineral and fossil fuel resources, the role nanotechnology may play in our future lives and how past developments in chemical understanding have impacted on society as a whole.
Competitions & Awards
We offer a supportive environment for all learners, with lessons designed to be interesting, engaging and suitably challenging, taking into account the needs of each individual pupil. As well as stretching our more able pupils in class, we enter teams in several national Chemistry competitions, encourage our Sixth Form students to complete the International Chemistry Olympiad and nominate pupils for Salter’s Chemistry summer camps.
Trips & Visits
In order to expand our pupils’ experiences beyond the laboratory, we organise trips to see the impact of Chemistry upon our lives and environment. Year 7 pupils visit Catalyst: The Museum of the Chemistry Industry at Widnes and, as part of their GCSE course, Year 9 pupils tour the Hanson Cement site near Clitheroe, putting on their hard hats and exploring the vast limestone quarry and processing plant. We encourage our Sixth Form students to broaden their chemical understanding by offering regular trips to evening lectures at local Universities.
Chemistry is a popular option at AS and A2 level and our results are excellent, with many pupils achieving top grades. Studying Chemistry at A Level opens up a wide choice of careers and the vast majority of our students continue with their study of Science at University on courses ranging from Medicine, Veterinary Science and Dentistry to Chemical Engineering and Chemistry itself.
