Home Economics (Food)

Years 7, 8 and 9

In Years 7, 8 and 9 the pupils study the best of Home Economics and Food Technology. During this time we cover all the basic practical skills for cooking in the home, but there is a definite design bias where the pupils use their knowledge and skills to design and make new food products with successful outcomes.

In Year 8 we encourage the students’ competitive spirit with the ‘Westholme Challenge’.  In this competition the students must design and make an International dish for 2 people which costs £5 or less.

Years 10 and 11

In Year 10 and 11 we have opted for AQA Home Economics Food and Nutrition. This is an excellent course, where the pupils study food science and nutrition in depth and continue their practical skills to a high level of competency, which is demonstrated in their Controlled Assessment worth 60% of the overall GCSE grade.  Our excellent results are shown below.

In the Sixth Form we follow the AQA Home Food Technology specification which gives students the opportunity to further develop their knowledge and understanding of nutrition and also allows them to design and make new products.

Trips

Students benefit from a number of trips to enhance their understanding of manufacturing processes.  Recent trips include the Dewlay Cheese factory, Garstang and Warburtons, Bolton.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Lower Sixth girls run a lunchtime Cookery Club for Year 7 pupils, which always proves very popular.

Last term we established a valuable link with Edge Hill University when their 2nd Year Art and Design Technology students visited the Home Economics department.  They were able to use the facilities to practise teaching Key Stage 3 pupils.
