Mandarin

Mandarin was introduced to Westholme in 2006. It is compulsory for all pupils in Years 7 and 8. Since its introduction, a growing number of pupils at Westholme have taken the chance to learn the most-spoken Chinese language. We strongly believe that by learning this increasingly important language, our pupils will gain a marked advantage when applying for higher education places or in workplaces of the future.

Mandarin Curriculum

At Westholme, Mandarin is offered from Year 7 to Year 13. Pupils in Years 7 and 8 will enjoy one hour of Mandarin every week. We aim to provide an encouraging and interesting course for beginners. Students find themselves not only acquiring language knowledge, but also embracing China’s abundant culture, such as the Chinese Zodiac and New Year customs, etc.

At the end of the Year 8, pupils will be given the option to continue their study of Mandarin in Year 9. With two hours of lessons every week, the Year 9 course aims to provide a sound foundation for GCSE. The emphasis, therefore, is on spoken and written skills and using a wider range of sentence structures.

At the end of Year 9, pupils can choose to continue with Mandarin to GCSE level. In Years 10 and 11, pupils will develop their language skills within topic areas such as tourism, media, careers and school life. We follow the Edexcel syllabus. Pupils complete controlled assessments (in speaking and writing). These take place during Years 10 and 11. In addition, pupils take the listening and reading examinations in June of Year 11.

We also currently offer Mandarin at A level. Both AS and A2 assessments draw on the following topics:

  • Food, diet and health
  • Transport, travel and tourism
  • Education and employment
  • Leisure, young people’s interest and Chinese festivals

We understand that learning Mandarin is challenging and also very demanding.  At Westholme, Mandarin is taught by a native language specialist who qualified in England. We have a successful proven track record in this subject. In 2011, 75% of GCSE Mandarin pupils achieved A or A* and 100 % achieve grades A* - C. As our Principal Mrs Croston, said: “Westholme doesn’t take the soft option and the girls have risen to the challenge beautifully!”

Activities

In addition to providing stimulating language lessons, the Chinese department offers pupils of all ages a wide range of opportunities to improve their language skills and experience Chinese culture. There is a Mandarin lunchtime clinic and culture club each week. We also have a native speaking assistant, who is able to offer extra help and organise various culture-related activities.
