THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S AWARD
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is highly popular at Westholme and currently involves some 200 pupils at various stages of the Bronze, Silver or Gold levels. For each of these levels there are 4 (5 for Gold) areas of activity.
They are:
Expeditions
Volunteering
Skill
Physical Recreation
Five-Day Residential Project (Gold only)
All of these activities take place out of school time with most expeditions setting off at weekends. Training for the expedition is provided after school one evening a week from 4.00-5.00pm. The award encourages students to start new activities, volunteer in the community, acquire new skills or develop existing interests and hobbies. Some of these can take place at school or organised independently by the participants. The Award is open to all pupils from Year 10 and above and it is organised at Westholme by Miss Incerti from whom you may obtain further details.
During the summer term, expeditions are taking place for all participants. The Gold expedition to Wales at Easter was very successful, although the very hot weather made it very challenging.
Silver Expeditions have taken place in the Forest of Bowland and the Year 10 Bronze participants have experienced their first expedition in the Ribble Valley. The wet weather provided them with important training and reinforced the need for proper preparation and organisation.
