Senior School for Boys at Wilmar Lodge

Single-sex education for boys aged 11 - 18

Welcome from the Senior Boys’ School Head of Year

At the beginning of this new chapter, I am proud and excited to be able to play my part in the growth of Westholme School.  It feels as if the final part of the Westholme jigsaw has now been put in place.  Having seen the successes of the Junior Boys’ and Girls’ divisions, it is exciting that boys too will now have the opportunity to enjoy and benefit from the complete Westholme education, all the way through to the age of eighteen.

We are firmly committed to the separate teaching of boys and girls, knowing that they learn better especially through the early teenage years when kept free of distractions. This is seen every year in the examination results. Boys and girls also have different ways of learning and our teaching methods allow us to respond to that. The staff team has vast experience of teaching boys and their expectations for them will be high. With the right balance of encouragement and discipline, your son will become the very best he can be and will go on to succeed, having been given the platform of academic and personal confidence.

What will a Westholme boy expect to find here? Certainly the teaching and pastoral care will be, as for the girls, second to none. The facilities are also in place; science laboratories, music centre, art and technology block, full sized swimming pool and professional theatre are just some of the aspects of our provision, to encourage and develop all kinds of talent. Sporting achievement will be a priority and the boys will experience rugby, football, martial arts, badminton, hockey, tennis and squash here on site. Cricket will take place at East Lancs Cricket Club, where we have strong links. Music and the performing arts have long been important at Westholme and we anticipate that the boys will make good use of the theatre, and join in with the numerous bands, choirs and orchestra. The range of clubs and societies will also be extensive and include engineering, chess, debating, film, science and all the sports. Trips and journeys will be a big part of your education, from places as close as Skipton Castle to those as far flung as Tanzania.

More than anything else we expect boys to be really happy here, surrounded by other pioneering boys who are setting new traditions and carving out a special community. There are no set ways of doing things at Westholme Senior School for Boys; in many ways, it is a blank page for the boys to write their own history. You can be assured that the long and successful history of the School supports you. Westholme boys will be very special indeed!
