Biology

Biology is one of the most popular subjects at A level with over one third of the Sixth Form opting for it and we are very successful with 75% of last year's Upper Sixth gaining grade A or B.
Currently there are 4 full time teachers in the Biology department, all of whom are extremely well qualified in their field. Each year Year 7 pupils take part in a trip to Chester Zoo where they study animal behaviour and get to handle some of the animals. This trip is enjoyed enormously by the girls and stimulates project work and discussion on our return to the classroom. We are fortunate in our surroundings at Westholme and the rural setting. Ecology projects are often undertaken in our own school grounds. The Sixth Form Biologists undertake a residential field course at the Blencathra field study centre in the Lake District , as part of their A level course. This is an invaluable learning experience, not only do they have to cope with a busy work schedule, they also experience living away from home and having to come to terms with the, sometimes, inclement weather conditions. All survive with a smile and come to enjoy the experience so much it influences their ultimate career choices.
Westholme has been awarded top School in the 2007 British Biology Olympiad. Four girls gained Gold Medals which put them in the top 50 girls in the country. One pupil gained a silver medal. All the gold medallists were invited to complete a further written test. A high score in this test allowed entry to the next stage of the competition to compete for selection to the British Team to represent Britain in the International Olympiad to be held in Canada in July. Neelam Hassan and Anna Anderson gained very high marks and were invited to Birmingham in April to complete the practical tests. Sameera Abas and Fatema Patel were Gold Medallists whilst Zaria Ali gained a Silver Medal. The Medallists went to receive their medals at Imperial College , London on 2nd July 2007 . Westholme School was also awarded the trophy for Top School Overall in this event.
