English and English Literature

A dynamic and forward-looking department, the English team is highly-qualified. The School Magazine is produced annually, with some sparkling creative writing and observant reports written by the pupils. We run a creative writing lunchtime club, and a public speaking team enters local and national competitions.

English is a popular subject, with good results at all levels. At present, the AQA syllabuses are followed. There is a wide-ranging stock of texts and we have access to the latest technology.

We are famed for our competitions, including those for National Poetry Day and World Book Day. There is a Year 7 Handwriting competition in the autumn term and a House Spoken English competition in the summer term. Most eagerly anticipated, however, is the annual Shakespeare or Poetry Speaking competition held just before Easter, which is always a delight, with many girls keen to enter and perform.

Many Sixth formers go on to study English at university on literature or linguistics courses. The English department is supported and enhanced by a wonderful library and a superb Drama department. We aim for a high-quality learning experience combined with fun!
