Home Economics (Food)

In Years 7, 8 and 9 the pupils study the best of Home Economics and Food Technology. In the rotation course we have ten/eleven weeks for each of these year groups. In this time we cover all the basic practical skills for cooking in the home, but there is a definite design bias where the pupils use their knowledge and skills to design and make new food products with successful outcomes.

In Year 10 and 11 we have opted for AQA Home Economics Food and Nutrition. This is an excellent course, where the pupils study food science and nutrition in depth and continue their practical skills to a high level of competency, which is demonstrated in their coursework worth 50% of the overall GCSE grade. In the Sixth Form we follow the AQA Home Economics course, which includes Food Science and Technology, Consumer and Society, and Consumer Protection. This offers both advanced practical work and theoretical work of a high academic rigour which is useful for the pupils to gain university entrance, as well as the life skills which are needed.
