Latin

Latin is offered as an option from Year 8. Pupils study the Cambridge Latin Course, following the life of Lucius Caecilius Iucundus and his family in ancient Pompeii in AD79, moving on to follow the life of his son Quintus, and his exploits in Roman Britain and ancient Alexandria. The course allows a solid combination of Latin vocabulary and grammar with an entertaining story line that focuses on the background to ancient Roman life. As of next year the course will also be taken alongside the accompanying I.T. course, which encourages pupils to develop their Latin through their skills on a computer, providing a varied approach which some pupils find more amenable.

Pupils can opt to continue the course towards a GCSE qualification, towards which the Cambridge Latin Course develops in a progressive and structured manner. Upon completing this course pupils then move to focus on passages of verse and prose by such ancient authors as Vergil and Pliny, on which they are examined in their final examinations.

Classical Civilisation is taught as a separate subject in the Sixth Form.
