Transition to Senior School

Year 6 Transition Information

Westholme's Primary School Liaison Officer, Mrs Jenny Ashcroft, will visit your primary school. She will talk to members of Year 6 and tell you more about coming to Westholme Senior School.

The Entrance Examination

The Entrance Examination for entry in September 2013 is on Saturday 10th November 2012 from 9am - 1.45pm. Further details regarding this can be obtained from the Registrar, Miss Gemma Cunliffe on 01254 506070.

Don't worry - the tests are designed for you to show what you can do! They are based on work you will have covered in your primary schools.

Your parents will drop you off in the Theatre Foyer at Westholme Senior School.
You don't need to wear school uniform.
You will need to bring writing equipment and a packed lunch.
You will be in a classroom with about 15 other girls and a teacher.
The teacher will make sure that you know what to do.
There are four tests:

Verbal Reasoning - 45 minutes
Maths - 1 hour
English Comprehension - 45 minutes
Essay - 30 minutes

  • There will be a break in the Dining Hall after the first two papers - school provides orange juice and a biscuit.
  • After the third paper, you will come back to the Dining Hall to have your packed lunch.
  • The tests are usually finished by 1.45pm - your parents will be waiting to take you home.
  • The results will be posted out to you - I'm sure you will do really well.

The Induction Afternoon and Evening

Westholme's Induction Afternoon and Evening for pupils starting in September 2012 takes place on Thursday 31st May 2012 from 1.30pm - 8pm.

  • Don't worry if you are the only person from your primary school - you'll soon meet other people in the same situation.
  • You should arrive at Senior School by 1.30pm.
  • Sixth Form prefects will meet you on the Car Park and bring you to the Theatre.
  • You will learn which form you are in and will meet your Head of Year, Form Teacher and classmates.
  • You will have 'taster lessons'.
  • There will be Sixth Form girls and teachers around to help you.
  • You will have a buffet tea together and then the Sixth Form prefects will organise some games outside, if the weather is good.
  • After tea, you will spend some time with your Form Teacher in your own Form Room. You will sit at the desk which will be yours next year.
  • You will be able to exchange addresses with other girls in the form, so that you can keep in touch over the holidays.
  • During the time when you are in the Form Room, your parents will arrive. They will come into the Theatre to hear some important information.
  • Your Form Teacher will bring you across to the Theatre to see the uniform Fashion Show.
  • At the end, you will be able to take your parents across to the Bungalow to show them your Form Room.
  • As you leave the Theatre, you will collect a welcome letter from one of the girls in the current Year 7.

First Day of Term

Your first day at Westholme Senior School will be Tuesday 4th September 2012.

Here are some members of Year 7 on their first day, outside the Bungalow. The Bungalow houses the Year 7 Form Rooms, so you will spend about half of your week in there, with the other members of Year 7. You will soon feel at home in the Bungalow but you will also have lessons in some of the other classrooms around school.

  • Members of the Sixth Form will meet you on the car park in case you have forgotten where to go.
  • You will meet up with your friends in your Form Room.
  • Your Form Teacher will come to take the register and take you to assembly in the Theatre.
  • During the morning, you will learn more about your timetable and the different routines at Senior School.
  • There will be a break at 10.15am and you will go into the Dining Hall at 12.00noon to learn how to collect your lunch and where to sit.
  • In the afternoon, your lessons begin.
