Westholme running teams took to the field last night in the first of the Cross Country series in the Blackburn Primary Schools' competition.
This year's races are at Witton Park not Lammack fields, so the competitors needed to familiarise themselves with this new course.
Warm ups were done and the teams were raring to go with both boys and girls races hotly contested by a large contingent of runners.
The girls were first off and I had set them a target for the whole team to finish in the top 15. Despite the girls thinking this a tough challenge, sure enough, every girl finished in the top 15 to give Westholme a great chance of winning the overall trophy at the next meeting. Eve Downham timed the race perfectly and won the whole race.
Next up were the boys and they were equally as determined to perform well for the team. Yet again Jonathan Brindle ran an excellent race and finished in first place way ahead of the rest of the field in a class of his own.
Congratulations to everyone on an excellent start to the series, and especially to Jonathan and Eve who both won their races which was a first for the Westholme runners.
