On a hot, dry day at AKS Lytham, the under 11 rounders team took to the field in the first game against AKS Lytham. Both teams batted and fielded well and Westholme were unlucky to lose 5-2 in a great starting game. Queens Chester followed in an exciting game finishing 51/2 to Queens and 4 to Westholme. St Bedes Manchester was our third group match and the girls were determined to improve their scores. Some much improved fielding and better batting saw Westholme win by 31/2 to 21/2 putting Westholme into third place in the section and in the plate competition.
From now on it was a knockout competition and Westholme girls showed their competitive spirit going into this game. Some superb batting and steady fielding gave Westholme a convincing win against Kirkham Grammar B team winning this game 121/2 to 1.
Semi finals ensued and a strong Alderley Edge team were our opponents. Some lovely fielding from Westholme put us in a strong batting position and the final score was 51/2 to Westholme, 3 to Alderley Edge.
Kirkham A team were our opponents in the final and Kirkham won the toss and put Westholme in to field. Some great hitting from Kirkham, catching us out with some reverse hits, gave Kirkham a 7 rounder score. Westholme went in to bat and some fabulous long hits from Isabelle Haslam and Sophie Gibson saw us getting closer and closer to their score. With 3 bats left, Westholme were 2 rounders behind and Kirkham were starting to crumble. One more bat from Westholme and we were 1 rounder away. The match couldn’t have been more nail biting with both teams determined to win the game. Despite two good bats from Westholme, Kirkham matched them with strong fielding, preventing us from scoring any more rounders. The final score was 7 to Kirkham, 6 to Westholme meaning Westholme were silver medal winners.
Well done to the whole squad who made a lovely playing unit in the final and made great progress throughout the day.
