Helen Sharman talk at UCLan
On Wednesday afternoon the children of Year 5 and 6 went to the UCLAN campus in Preston to listen to a talk by the first British astronaut, Helen Sharman.
She gave a fascinating talk for an hour which was all about her 8 days spent aboard the Russian Mir Space Station in 1991, 25 years ago in May. The Junior pupils were particularly interested to hear about the space toilet and the complications presented by weightlessness. In addition, they were told that her luggage allowance for the trip was a meagre 180 grams!
After the talk, the audience was given the opportunity to ask questions and the afternoon ended with the comment that: “Science can make your life as exciting as you want it to be”. Our students were also excited to discover that Helen opened the Science Wing at Wilmar Lodge in 1994 so we took a photo of the plaque and showed it to her – what a wonderful way to end the afternoon!
