World Book Day 2024 Celebrations

Seniors

Westholme students were delighted to be treated to a whole day of celebrations as part of World Book Day 2024. Students from the Seniors were asked to come dressed as characters from literature who inspired them. Not to be outdone by the students, staff were also given the challenge of constructing a costume representing a character from a novel who they admire. Mr and Mrs Anafi, who are clearly Harry Potter enthusiasts, became a very convincing Professor Dumbledore and Professor McGonagle. Miss Davies became dressed as Jo March, from ‘Little Women’. Mr Scorah, our newest member of the PE department, wore a beautiful dress, representing the main character from ‘The Boy in the Dress’. Needless to say, I was thrilled and delighted by the effort from staff and students.

A huge thank you must also go to Thomas Franks, who were also keen to dress up as a diverse range of literary characters. They delivered a feast, where we were treated to Jack and the Beanstalk burgers, Horrid Henry chicken burgers and jam tarts, inspired by ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Seeing students fully attired in costume feasting on these wonderful culinary creations was a sight to behold. Students were also given the opportunity to complete a ‘Shelfie Hunt’ – where they were asked to identify the bookshelves of a range of teachers. Also, they were given the challenge of designing their perfect bookshelf and they were asked, as a form, to choose which books would be featured on their shelf. Finally, I gave them the task of choosing an inspiration quotation from a book and I hope to have these transformed into artworks to be featured on the English corridor. Donations from students will be going towards the Guide Dogs charity. It is our ambition to purchase and name a guide dog.

Thank you for your support and generosity. I never take for granted the positivity of students and parents. On days like these, I am often reminded how wonderful our school is. Our students always throw themselves into everything, which reminded me of a quotation from ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’, by Oscar Wilde. In the novel, the hedonist, Lord Henry tells Dorian to “Live the wonderful life that is in you!” I hope you too can be inspired by your next book – recommendations are always happily received!
