Cecelia Ahern Book Talk

Visit by Renowned Author

Today we were very privileged to have an incredibly talented & approachable author in our midst when we welcomed renowned author Cecelia Ahern to Westholme to talk to our Year 8 & 9 girls, in partnership with Silverwood Events.

Cecelia admitted she has always loved books, reading and writing from a very early age and it seemed to come quite naturally. She has had over twenty novels published since her first book, ‘PS. I Love You’, at the tender age of twenty one, when she decided to forego her Masters’ degree and fulfil her passion for writing. In her own words, she never actually thought she would get published though and simply wrote her first book for herself. Much to her surprise it was published and sold thousands of copies around the world, and then due to its success, was soon after made into a film by the director of ‘Devil Wears Prada’. With such backing it is no surprise that it too became an international hit and a firm favourite of romantics everywhere.

Many of our pupils admitted to never having read any of her books; not surprisingly, as Cecelia is better known for writing novels for adults. With her last book ‘Flawed’, she stepped into a new genre of Young Adult literature and yet again found an appreciative audience amongst 12-14 year olds. Today she came to talk about the sequel and her latest novel ‘Perfect’ which doesn’t go on sale until April 6th, so giving us a sneak preview and the chance to purchase advance copies too! If the girls didn’t know who she was before this afternoon they certainly did by the time she left us and those who hadn’t already ordered books were soon queuing up to get one signed.

Cecelia happily answered questions from the floor and even read a chapter from her new book. After which she discussed her writing methods, inspirations and insights as well as offering advice to the potential young authors in the audience. She recommended always using other’s work to open up the mind and spark the imagination and to ask the question ‘What if?’

This seemed like a perfect note on which to end and following thanks from Miss Smith and the presentation of a gift from Anna Heeley, there was just enough time for book signing and photographs.

Many thanks to Elaine and Jake at Silverwood Events for yet another fabulous opportunity; we look forward to the next one!
