Junior Prizegiving

A wonderful evening of celebration

Last night, we hosted the annual Junior School Prizegiving Ceremony in the Croston Theatre. We welcomed a large audience of parents, grandparents, staff and Governors into school to celebrate the achievements of our talented students.

Our Guest of Honour this year was Scriptwriter, Furquan Akhtar. Not only is he the winner of the BBC’s prestigious Alfred Bursary Award (2013-14), Furquan is also a Guardian Newspaper One to Watch (2012), one of Prolific North’s Top Writers in the North (2017) and is part of Channel 4’s Commissioning Network. Furquan has also written episodes for some of our pupils’ favourite television programmes including The Dumping Ground and Wolfblood.

Proceedings began with a rousing performance by the Brass Group before Chairman of Governors, Mr Marsden delivered the welcome address. Mrs Barnett’s report on the school year included a wonderful montage of video clips of the children, staff and parents describing their favourite things about Westholme.

The presentations of the prizes were interspersed with moving performances by the Year 3 and 4 Choir, the Year 5 and 6 Choir and the Year 6 Recorder Ensemble. Year 6 were delighted to receive their ‘Class of 2017’ hoodies and we are sure they will wear them with pride to remind them of their happy years at Beardwood Bank.

It was also lovely to welcome the Year 2 students to Prizegiving and their performance of ‘Yankee Doodle’ showed such confidence and talent; we are sure that lots of them will be taking to the stage to accept prizes in a year’s time.

Furquan’s address was particularly poignant on such a special night as he likened the children’s journey at Westholme to how he writes scripts and emphasised how important it is for them to ‘be their own hero’ and overcome the obstacles they may face such as self-doubt. Furquan also reiterated that even if the children hadn’t been a prize winner on the night, there are things just as important as winning such as being a good friend.

We would like to say thank you to Furquan and to all the children and staff for helping us to celebrate another wonderful year at Westholme!
