Westholme students celebrate the Year of the Monkey
To celebrate the Year of the Monkey, Westholme students of all ages took part in a number of cultural activities.
A special assembly was presented by 7T in the form of a short play that depicted one of the four great Chinese Classical novels – Journey to the West. This story is also known as Monkey Magic in the Western world and students at Wilmar Lodge were thoroughly entertained by the performance. A group of girls in Year 9 also participated in a dance number and everyone agreed that their lively performance was a wonderful way to celebrate Chinese New Year!
Activities also took place in the Home Economics room where our Year 10 Mandarin students were busy cooking up some lovely Chinese delights. They learnt the art of dumpling making as they prepared and cooked vegetarian and meat dumplings with authentic Chinese ingredients. A highlight was tasting their delicious creations which were truly scrumptious!
Finally, students at our Nursery and Infant School have also been marking this special calendar date. Earlier in the week, Nursery children enjoyed a special tasting session and enjoyed eating Chinese delicacies including spring rolls and prawn crackers. Meanwhile the children in the baby room decorated monkeys with paint. Earlier today, Year 1 transformed one of their classrooms into a Chinese restaurant where they enjoyed a delicious Chinese banquet and sampled spring rolls, prawn crackers, bean sprouts and rice. During their lessons, they have been learning all about Chinese culture and their banquet today was an exciting way to supplement their studies.
Everyone at Westholme would like to say Kung Hei Fat Choi!
