Outstanding team and individual performances in icy conditions!
Nine Westholmers qualified to represent Blackburn in the Schools’ Cross Country Championships held at Worden Park, Leyland. In freezing temperatures, sleet and icy cold winds the girls produced a number of outstanding individual and team performances.
In Year 7 Alexa McTiffin achieved an excellent 5th place, closely followed by Olivia Pickford in 7th and Lucy Fielden in 8th place. Baylie Thompson put in a strong finish to complete the race in a very creditable 28th position out of a field of 68 runners. Alexa, Olivia and Lucy were the first three runners home for Blackburn and their superb positions put the Blackburn Year 7 team in 1st place with just 42 points, ahead of Chorley on 111 points.
The Blackburn Junior Girls’ team was represented by Molly Nelligan in Year 8 and Flora Robson in Year 9. Both girls ran extremely well in difficult conditions to finish 37th and 40th respectively in a field of 72 runners.
Outstanding individual performances were achieved by Katie Buckley in Year 11 who came 2nd in the Inter Girls’ race and Beckie Taylor who was also 2nd in the Senior Girls’ race. Emma Dean in Year 10 showed true stamina and determination in the Inter Girls’ race to help the Blackburn team to 3rd place.
Both Katie Buckley and Beckie Taylor have been selected to represent Lancashire County in the English Schools’ Cross Country Championships to be held in March in Somerset.
