Polar Explorer Day

Year 1 were very excited to take part in their Polar Explorer day today.

Dressed for an expedition, the children completed an action packed day and were very excited to meet a real explorer, Mr Kenealy. He spoke to the class about his expeditions to various locations and showed them photographs and video clips of his adventures.

The children asked him questions and talked about different equipment, survival and dangers. The photographs of frost bitten toes were a real highlight!!!

Next, the children put their expedition skills to the test by completing an orienteering course, finding lots of famous explorers along the way. There was much excitement when they found Ernest Shackleton as earlier in the week, the children had learnt all about his life and travels.

After lunch, Year 1 talked about different shelters, the importance of layering up and they enjoyed tasting expedition food including vegetable chilli and Kendal Mint Cake which is good for energy.

A fantastic day was had by all and Year 1 would like to thank Mr Kenealy for sharing his knowledge, photographs and experiences.
