Home Prep Welcome Curriculum Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) History

History

At Infant School, we encourage our children to want to discover what happened in the past and what it would have been like to live a long time ago. They begin their journey as young historians by considering their own past and all of the skills they have learnt as they have grown up. Children find out about the history of their own family and are encouraged to share family stories.

By exploring their own history and establishing their own identity, our children are then able to foster respect for each other. They have a natural curiosity to explore the lives of others and our history teaching enables them to investigate the lives of others through a range of different topics. These range from The Great Fire of London and Victorian life to studying famous individuals such as Samuel Pepys. Children are encouraged to think of their own questions and topics follow child-directed paths wherever possible.  We closely examine a range of artefacts and photographs and children are provided with a variety of practical and teacher led activities.

Work is brought to life by a range of school visits such as Judges’ Lodgings at Lancaster, Fleetwood Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry. Lancashire Museum loan boxes further supplement our history curriculum by bringing the past to life.
