Here at the Infant School, we create a positive attitude to physical activity, sewing the vital seeds for lifelong participation for our youngsters to lead healthy lifestyles. We aim to provide a comprehensive programme building on what children have learnt in the Early Years Foundation Stage, to develop skills and concepts in relation to physical competence, health and fitness, safe practice and social skills.
Children in Years One and Two are provided with a varied programme of games, dance and gymnastics activities across a year, with lessons two lessons a week. They learn to use apparatus with increasing control, having lessons inside and outside.
Children develop the skills needed for team games and enjoy simple competitive games in pairs and small groups. They enjoy dance activities to modern music and learn about rhythm using music from different countries
KS1 children also have a weekly swimming lesson with qualified teachers. These lessons involve water safety, confidence and stroke development. A swimming gala is held in the summer term with activities to suit all levels of ability.
In both Year One and Two the children look forward to our annual sports day. This is a combination of competitive events, some team events and some ‘special’ events. The children love traditional races, working together as a team and the special obstacle races. Fun is had by all!
Our physical education is complimented by our extra-curricular provision. We have a games club to develop fine and gross motor skills and clubs such as Tennis. In addition to this we provide Ballet and Martial Arts, both of which are delivered by specialist coaches.
