Sophie’s Success

Triumph for Sophie!

Congratulations to Westholme pupil Sophie Lamb who recorded the greatest victory of her short career on her England debut.

As we reported not long ago, Sophie’s recent success was rewarded with an international call up, as she represented England Under 16s against Spain at Pannal Golf Club.

Sophie and her  partner lost to the Spaniards by 5 and 4 in the foursomes competition, but bounced back in spectacular fashion beating a highly-touted 16-year-old from Madrid, by 3 and 2 in a singles round.

That victory, watched by England coach Scott Godfrey, contributed to England’s resounding 9.5 to 2.5 victory over their opponents.

The Pannal Trophies is a major Under 16 mixed competition that attracts many of the best youngsters from all over Europe.

Sophie’s proud father, Phil, said: “She performed really well. It’s only three years ago since she played her first 18 holes, so to be at this level now is a phenomenal achievement. We are really proud of her.

“She came up against some very experienced and talented youngsters but that victory over Marta is definitely the best win of her short career so far. It was a fantastic win against their number one on her England debut. Her progress has been superb and I hope it will continue.”

Sophie will now avert her attention to the National County finals to be held in Devon next month after being selected for the Lancashire Ladies squad, where she will be the youngest member.
