Author, Philip Ardagh and illustrator, Elissa Elwick visit Westholme Infant School
This afternoon, we were delighted to welcome author, Philip Ardagh and illustrator, Elissa Elwick to Westholme Infant School to talk about their new children’s book, Leafy the Pet Leaf. This visit, in conjunction with our friends at Silverwood Book Events gave the students in Pre School to Year 3 the opportunity to gain a real insight into the world of a children’s author and illustrator.
To begin, Philip talked to the children about each of the characters in the book and explained what pets they had. He and Elissa had pet puppets and interacted with the children, asking them questions about their own pets. An activity they enjoyed later with Elissa was when the children were asked to help her create a character of their own – it could be a boy or a girl, tall or small – in fact, any number of different features. Our children chose a tall, thin boy with enormous feet and wild, crazy hair. He was called Sugar and had a pet unicorn called T-shirt – what an interesting character! Elissa also drew one of the main characters in the book, Floss.
After the talk had finished, the children were excited to learn that they could have a copy of the book they had purchased, signed by the duo. Philip and Elissa were amazed to see that one of the display boards in the corridor just outside the dining hall had been created using all of the characters in their book – they even signed the board before they left, leaving us with a lasting memory of a fantastic visit.
We would like to say thank you to Philip, Elissa and their publishers, Walker Books for taking the time to visit our school. Special thanks also go to Elaine and Jake from Silverwood Book events for hosting this event with us.
