‘This House believes that mothers should stay at home to look after their children’

Debate raged fiercely as Eve and Pascha put forward their view that when a woman gives birth she “signs a contract – to be a mother”, stating that ‘mothers know best’ and that creating a bond with a child in the first, formative years, is critical; Hannah and Saara however vehemently disagreed, citing ‘trophy wife’ syndrome, the dangers of a patriarchal society and the need for women to be able to fulfil their career aspirations.

Questions from the floor tested our mainspeakers and at times the argument grew heated; however, our able chair, Katie Goodier brought us to a peaceful, if not unanimous conclusion:
