A fabulous afternoon at Kirkham for the first round of the AJIS Cricket Cup yesterday. The sun shone, the pitch was perfect for batting yet still offering something for a bowler who hit the right length.
Batting first, we played some technically good shots but failed to penetrate the field at first. This led to pressure mounting on our opening pair. That pressure soon told an they lost three wickets quickly. The next pair steadied the ship, running the odd scampered single as the Kirkham fielding was excellent. As the innings wore on our shots began to add up and we were soon scoring much more freely. Sadly though, wickets continued to tumble, taking runs off our score. We finished with 198.
Bowling, Aditi (who makes history as the first girl to play in the AJIS Cup) struck with her first over and bowled their opener with a superb delivery. We then took some quick wickets and the game was on! It was tight all the way through their innings as our fielding was good and they struggled to penetrate our ring. On the whole we bowled well. They finished on 223 to win by 25 runs and knock us out of the cup. I do feel that we could have won had we not lost so many wickets. Credit though to Kirkham and good luck to them in the next round.
