Curriculum

Westholme offers a curriculum which is extensive in both breadth and depth to ensure that all our pupils are inspired, foster intellectual curiosity, are independent leaners and develop skills in a wide range of disciplines. Excellent teaching is combined with a well-structured pastoral care system to provide the basis for effective learning. The progress of each pupil is carefully monitored by teaching staff, form tutors and Heads of Year and the school believes in a close partnership with parents.

Years 7-9

In Years 7-9, we offer an enriched National Curriculum with English, Mathematics and Science at the core. From Year 8 Biology, Chemistry and Physics are taught as discrete subjects and we have seven purpose built laboratories. The Humanities are also taught in separate subjects and offer exciting activities both in and out of the classroom. All pupils study Spanish and can choose to study Mandarin, German or Latin in Year 8, or continue with French. Computing is well-resourced and pupils learn coding and programming skills from the start. The Arts play a vital role in life at Westholme and all pupils study Art, Design Technology, Textiles, Food, Drama and Music. Sport and Physical Education encompass a wide variety of activities at the highest level and are offered to all pupils within lesson time and the co-curricular programme.

We are fortunate in having small classes to ensure that all pupils gain the support and attention needed to help them flourish. In core subjects where setting occurs, the groups can be even smaller.

Years 10-11

At GCSE the emphasis is on choice and flexibility. Over twenty subjects are offered and results are above the national average across the board. Class sizes are likely to be smaller than average and subjects engage in enrichment activities which support and enhance the pupils’ experience. All students are expected to take a core curriculum of English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Sciences a Modern Foreign Language and a Humanity alongside their GCSE option choices. Non-GCSE subjects PSHE and PE are also compulsory for all.
