At Westholme we aim to make Physics lessons relevant, practical, stimulating and enjoyable. The laboratories are modern, well-equipped and fitted with interactive whiteboards.
Years 7-8 (Key Stage 4)
Students study a wide variety of topics increasing in depth and complexity. These include the issues surrounding energy resources, the uses of electromagnetic radiation for communications such as “Blue Tooth”, practical applications of ionising radiation, electrical safety and the cost of domestic electricity, safely stopping cars and theories regarding the creation of our Universe.
Students of all abilities are encouraged to enjoy learning about Physics in a supportive atmosphere where the emphasis is placed on experimental work and demonstrations to develop a thorough understanding.

Other information
As a department we believe that education takes place in many ways and therefore encourage students to take place in the variety of extra curricular activities on offer.
Engineering Club takes place every Friday lunchtime and the pupils have designed and built gliders, solar powered cars, steam boats etc. The older students also have the opportunity to “Walk on Water” by designing shoes to try and walk across the swimming pool. We run regular trips to evening lectures at local universities and biennially travel further afield, taking Y12 & 13 on a three day trip to Geneva to tour the facilities at CERN.
More able students are challenged with activities such as the Physics Olympiad and the World Wide Physics Olympics.
