Physical Education

Westholme School is very fortunate to have an extensive range of facilities for sports including:

  • Sports Hall – four badminton courts, gymnastic equipment, netball, volleyball & basketball courts.
  • All weather astro-turf pitch – multi-sports, full size hockey pitch & tennis courts.
  • Sports field – grass pitches for hockey and football. Athletics track and rounders pitches.
  • Rugby pitch/cricket field.
  • Five netball courts/ six tennis hard courts.
  • Swimming pool with learner pool.
  • Sixth Form lecture theatre is used for various activities including aerobics.
  • Sixth Form dance studio and fitness gym.
  • Cross country running and orienteering around the school grounds and fields.

Years 7-9 (Key Stage 3)

All students have 2 PE lessons each week.

The curriculum for girls includes:
Autumn/Spring terms: Dance, Gymnastics, Swimming Hockey and Netball
Summer term: Athletics, Rounders and Tennis

The curriculum for boys includes:
Autumn/Spring terms: Football, Rugby, Badminton, Gymnastics & Swimming
Summer term: Athletics, Cricket and Tennis

Years 10-11 (Core PE)

All students have a double lesson each week. The activities in Year 10 are similar to Key Stage 3, however in Year 11 students have more choice and are often practising/playing with Sixth Form students for U18 teams or taking part in a range of activities including: golf, fitness, swimming.

Years 10-11 (GCSE)

Examination Board: OCR

Students will have the opportunity to improve their own performance, and also learn how to become both a sports coach and official. They will be assessed in three practical activities – one from the ‘individual activity’ list, one from the ‘team activity’ list and one from either list. Out of school activities such as skiing, horse riding and dancing can sometimes also be assessed. In the ‘Analysing and Evaluating Performance’ section, each candidate will produce an action plan to improve the quality and effectiveness of the performance for their specified sport.

It is strongly advised that students opting to do this subject, should already be attending some of the school sports practices and/or taking part in sport outside of school, as the course is 40% practically assessed.

The effects of a healthy lifestyle on our body and benefits for sports performance are covered in the theory section of the course:

    Applied anatomy and physiology including the effects of exercise on the body and biomechanics. Physical training including how to improve your overall fitness and the prevention of injury.
    Socio-cultural influences including factors affecting participation and the commercialisation of sport and ethics, drugs and violence in sport. Sports psychology – how movement skills are learned, goal setting and mental preparation. Health, fitness and well-being including the benefits of exercise to health , the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle and diet and nutrition.
