Weird and wonderful words on the Westholme Word Wall!
Weird and wonderful words abounded on the Westholme Word Wall. Words ranging from gongoozler (an idle spectator) to Boondoggling (a trivial or useless undertaking). There were words selected for their onomatopoeic quality and words which amused, such as skedaddle and kerfuffle. However the winning Westholme Word chosen by visiting parents and pupils at Westholme’s Open Day was floccinaucinihilipilification.
This word, suggested by Amelia Kenworthy of 9W, attracted her attention because it is weird how such a long word refers to things considered of little value. For the Latin lovers, the word is also fascinating in that it contains four Latin words denoting of little value; namely: floccus/I, nauci, nihil and pilus/i!
Well done Amelia and lets hear it for floccinaucinihilipilification!
