Iconic Pop Prints

Year 11, 12 and 13 students travelled to Liverpool to see the Roy Lichtenstein and John Piper exhibition at the Tate gallery. One of the most radical and influential artists of the 20th century, Lichtenstein is known for his iconic pop prints inspired by comic strips.

They learnt that Lichtenstein wanted to celebrate the things 'that are usable, forceful, and vital about commercial art'. He restricted his paint colours to imitate the four colours of printers' inks and devised his own dot screen method.

In the afternoon students visited Liverpool One to take photographs of the unique architecture, taking inspiration from photographers Ted Van Cleave and Kevin St Grey. The weather conditions were perfect for a photo shoot and will inform their practical work at GCSE and A Level.
