Mr and Mrs George Lamb present their annual prizes for Art and Science
We were thrilled to welcome back to Westholme this morning, Mr and Mrs George Lamb for their annual awards presentations. As former Managing Director of Blackburn Chemicals, Mr Lamb has awarded the prize for best science essay for the past fifteen years. Mrs Jenny Lamb, an avid art lover, enjoys selecting and awarding the prize for the best artwork.
The Blackburn Chemicals Science Award
The essay title for 2013 was ‘Panic at the Pumps’. Students wrote about the scenario where petrol was £30 per litre and the effects this would have upon our society. The standard of submissions for the science essay was exceptionally high this year, and for the first time it was decided that there should be prizes awarded for Commended and Highly Commended entries. After much deliberation by Mr Lamb, the Essay Prize for 2013 was awarded to Kathryn Jaitly.
Highly Commended certificates were awarded to the following students:
Iman Chaudhry (7W), Hasna Ghafoor (8M), Jessica Keenan (9W), Briony Pay (10L), Isabelle Turner (VIT)
Commended certificates were awarded to the following students:
Lois Westall (9W), Francesca Moriarty (9W), Sarah McHugh (10M), Emily Winter (10L), Emily Jones (11W), Hayley Forbes (11M)
The George Lamb Art Award
For the first time in the award’s fifteen year history, there were two Art Prizes presented this year, due to the standard of the students’ work. Mrs Lamb spoke of the joy that producing and viewing art can bring, and how beautiful artwork can really lift your spirits and your mood. Congratulations to Chloe Hutchings for her stunning painting, and to Sophie Taylor for her amazing Emu installation.
