Mary Poppins wasn’t just ‘practically perfect’ it was a supercaliliftagilisticexpialidocious spectacular show.
The students all thoroughly enjoyed the whole production with its stunning set, colourful costumes and fabulous performances from all the cast.
On Wednesday 14 May, Two coach’s department Westholme on the 70+strong trip to see Mary Poppins at the Palace Theatre, Manchester — and what an unforgettable experience it was! From the moment the curtain rose to the final bow, our students were transported into a whimsical world full of charm, spectacle, and heart.
The production dazzled with its breath-taking choreography, spectacular special effects (yes, Mary really did fly!), and a heart-warming message about family, kindness, and imagination. Iconic songs like “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”, “Step in Time”, and “A Spoonful of Sugar” had the audience smiling, toe-tapping, and applauding throughout. Students and staff are still talking about the performance saying:
“I loved how magical it felt. I couldn’t believe my eyes when Mary flew over the audience!” –
“It made me want to get up and join in – the energy on stage was amazing.”
“I didn’t expect to enjoy it this much. The actors were so talented, and the songs are stuck in my head now – in a good way!”
The cast delivered phenomenal performances, with Mary Poppins herself striking the perfect balance between stern charm and sparkling mischief, while Bert’s energy and charm lit up the stage. The set design and transitions left many students commenting on the “movie-like” quality of the scenes, especially during the magical nursery transformations and the breathtaking rooftop tap routine.
Theatre trips like this one are a vital part of our commitment to broadening cultural horizons and inspiring creativity. We’re thrilled to have given so many students their first taste of live West End theatre — and we’re already planning the next adventure! My favourite student quote of the night was, “Can we go again? It was practically perfect in every way!”
