Prep 5 Review
Prep 5 have had a fun packed few weeks since returning after the Easter holidays.
In English, we finally finished “The Wolf Wilder” by Katherine Rundell and read with excitement how Feo, our main character, led the revolution to release her mother from prison and finally escape evil Rakov’s threatening ways. This week, we have been creating our very own newspaper article after researching the required features.
At the end of last term, we held our annual Prep 5 Reading Competition in the Croston Theatre. Mrs Davenport was the adjudicator and, during her feedback to each of the readers, she commented on how confident everyone was during their performance and how she was impressed with their use of eye contact throughout and characterisation by using different voices. Rameen was a deserving winner. However, all children read beautifully and gained valuable points for their houses.
In mathematics we have completed our topic on decimals and percentages, and have enjoyed practical work, using cubes to estimate the volume of various shapes.
We have just completed our “Animals including humans” topic in science and have looked at the key stages of a mammal’s lifecycle, ordering various mammals according to their gestation periods, learnt about foetal development and considered changes humans may experience in old age. The children brought in pictures from when they were younger, as did the staff: can you guess which member of staff is which from the attached photos? We are about to start another new topic: “Living things and their habitats”. We will have the chance to create a cutting from a strawberry plant and we are hoping that we will successfully grow our own strawberries by the end of term!
In computing, the boys and girls have been learning about how to stay safe online; they have done some research on Greta Thunberg, and discussed how she was a positive influence in her generation.
In PSHE, we have been discussing how belonging to an online community can have positive and negative consequences. We took part in a quiz where we had to decide at what age it was legal to be able to do certain things, such as getting married, flying an aircraft and being tried in court. We found some surprising age ranges!
In our craft and design topic in art, we have studied various architects such as Zaha Hadid who was born in Baghdad and who was the first woman to be awarded an architectural prize for her futuristic soft and curved designs. We have also looked at Friedensreich Hundertwasser who was a well-known Austrian artist most famous for his imaginative and whimsical architectural work. We had to use our observational skills to draw a selection of houses before creating our own stylistic designs.
Mrs Butler, Mrs Burton and Mr Harrison are incredibly proud of everything that this year’s Prep 5 have achieved and have thoroughly enjoyed teaching this amazing bunch of children! We look forward to our last few weeks of the term.
