STEM Challenge Day!

On Thursday 8 June we were delighted to host our annual Year 5 STEM Challenge day, bringing together teams from primary schools across the region to showcase their skills in various Science, Maths and Engineering challenges. This year’s event was attended by no fewer that 15 teams with some incredibly impressive detective work, bridge building, boat design and mathematical ability on show throughout the day.

Students moved around the subject areas throughout the day, and were shown around the fantastic facilities on offer by making use of the Science laboratories, the astro turf, the Design and Technology workshop, as well as the LRC. It was great to see all of the students enjoying themselves and working well together in teams to solve the various array of challenges that had been presented to them.

Lunch was included halfway through, and after a morning full of activities the students and staff members eagerly tucked into what had been laid out by our catering partners Thomas Franks. After this they were back to the challenge to finish off the remainder of the activities full of energy and renewed vigour for problem solving.

There was a post challenge debrief in the LRC at the end, where Mr Western and other members of Westholme staff congratulated each team on their efforts and awarded prizes for the best team for each individual activity. They were awarded certificates and a School prize that represented their category, with the overall winning team also receiving individual prizes. The winners were below:

Biology – Helmshore Primary School

Chemistry – Eccleston St Mary’s CE Primary School

Physics – Sabden Primary School

Product Design – St Anne’s and St Joseph’s RC Primary School

Maths – St Joseph’s Park Hill

Overall Winner – Sabden Primary School

Each student was handed a Westholme branded drawstring bag including goodies and a certificate of participation. Congratulations to all those students who took part, and a big thank you to all of the members of staff from both Westholme and our visiting schools for organising. Overall it was a fantastic day celebrating all things STEM!
