Starting Senior School is a major milestone in your son or daughter’s life; it marks those first steps into adulthood and its accompanying opportunities and challenges. Leaving the familiarity and comfort of primary school can be a daunting prospect for some but, at Westholme we pride ourselves on our provision of a nurturing and supportive environment for all of our Year 7 students. Provided by our experienced pastoral team, such support enables our students to adapt quickly to the demands of secondary school education. All students are actively encouraged to make the most of all of the opportunities on offer to them. Whatever their talent or skill, we have something for everyone and work hard to foster a ‘try everything’ approach as we strongly believe that students can learn just as much from not succeeding at an activity as they can flourishing in it!
As well as orientating students with the day to day logistics of starting somewhere new, time is also spent on developing respectful and meaningful relationships between our Year 7 students as they begin their long journey together as a year group. Friendships can change over a student’s secondary school career so, from day one we are keen to establish a strong year group identity and collective. In previous years, this has been achieved through charitable endeavours; last year this was our Sports Relief ‘Channel Challenge’ where Year 7 worked together to collectively swim the English Channel – albeit in the warmth of our very own on site swimming pool. We also organise and run residential trips away to help establish positive and supportive relationships within our youngest students.
We understand the worries that you or your son or daughter may have in starting at a new school and run a comprehensive induction programme in the summer term of Year 6 to help inform, reassure and settle students. Even with the recent Covid 19 pandemic, we ensured that students were introduced to key members of staff, as well as their peers through targeted and supported online activities and forums. Whatever the format, we know how important it is for students to see lots of familiar faces on that very important first day in September. Our Year7’s also start a day earlier than other year groups so that they can explore the school further, uninterrupted by anyone else!
The aim of the Year 7 tutor team is simple: for your son or daughter to wake up happy, excited and confident to come to school each and every day. We believe a positive engagement with school life and our community is paramount to every child’s happiness and well-being. The expectations we have of our youngest students are high and we work hard to support and encourage our Year 7 students to start their Westholme journey with enthusiasm, determination and a commitment to being the very best that they can be, both in and out of the classroom.
