Update from the Head of Prep, Mrs Hornby
09/05/2024
This week at Prep has been one to remember, as we had the great privilege of welcoming a very special guest, Mrs. Mavis Woodridge, to our school assembly. At 94 years old, Mavis captivated the entire Prep community with her moving and inspirational account of life during World War II.
From the moment she stepped into our Prep Hall, there was a sense of awe and respect in the room — you truly couldn’t hear a pin drop. Every pupil and member of staff was completely absorbed as Mavis shared her memories of growing up during wartime Britain, including stories of rationing, air raid shelters, tasting her first banana and her family’s contributions to the war effort. Her ability to bring history to life through her personal experiences was both powerful and deeply moving.
What made the morning even more special were the extraordinary items Mavis brought with her — treasured photographs, wartime documents, and beautifully preserved medals. These gave us all a rare and tangible glimpse into the past and sparked lots of fascinating questions from the children afterwards.
We are so grateful to Mavis for sharing her remarkable story with us and for reminding us how important it is to learn from those who lived through history. It was a true honour to have her with us, and I know her visit will stay with the children for a very long time.
We waved goodbye to our Prep 6 children this morning as they go on their PGL weekend. I know they will have a great time and we look forward to hearing all about it on next week.
Have a lovely weekend,
Carla Hornby
