Prep 6 Science – Shadows
Prep 6 have continued their light topic after returning to school after the Easter break. This week they have been investigating shadows and how shadows are formed. With the weather being on our side, we decided to take the classroom outside and instead of using a torch as our light source, we used the sun!
We drew around our shadows at three different times of the day. We had to ensure we stood in the same spot each time to study our shadows movement properly.
We noticed that our shadows moved throughout the day and had completely changed direction from the morning to the afternoon. We discussed, as a class, that this was because the sun moves throughout the day as it rises in the east and sets in the west.
We also noticed that after our lunch, our shadow was at its shortest. Again, we discussed that this was because the sun was directly above us.
We loved being able to take our lesson outside and track the suns movement just like the used to many years ago!
