Prep French PGL Trip
Article written by Mr Harrison
At 3.30am on Thursday 24 April, 49 excited children from Prep 4 to 6, along with 6 staff members, went on a trip to northern France. We stayed at the Château d’Ebblinghem, which was a great base for our trip. It had plenty of space to relax, and was set in the peaceful countryside near St Omer. We enjoyed excellent food, often with a French theme, and there was plenty for everyone.
We had a packed programme; here are a few highlights of places we visited during our stay:
- Musée Somme 1916, Albert
We explored this fascinating underground museum which gave insight into the Battle of the Somme. It was really interesting to see the displays and learn about what life was like for soldiers in the trenches. - Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial
At this important historic site, we saw and walked through preserved trenches. Our guide helped us to understand the sacrifices made during the war. - Boulogne-sur-Mer
We spent some time in this lively seaside town, visiting the bustling market and worked together to complete the trail of the old town. - Chocolaterie de Beussent
The children loved visiting this chocolate factory! They got to see how chocolate is made and enjoyed tasting some delicious treats. - Les Escargots du Bocage (Snail Farm)
This was a unique stop where we learned all about snails and how they’re farmed. It was surprising and interesting to find out how snails are part of French food traditions. Some of us even sampled a snail or two – with differing outcomes! - St Omer
On our return to Calais, and the ferry, we also had time to visit the town of St Omer, with its beautiful buildings. We spent time in a lovely local park.
Everyone had a fantastic time on the trip. The children learned a great deal, experienced new things, and had fun exploring a different country. The château was a perfect home away from home. We arrived back at Westholme at 9.45pm on the evening of Sunday 27 April. Despite the early start and late finish, and a few tired staff and pupils, it was certainly a trip to remember!
