VE Day Celebrations

On Thursday, Prep took part in a variety of activities to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Mrs Milnes took an assembly to explain all about VE Day and the children listened to Vera Lynn singing wartime songs. During the day, Prep children completed various activities such as designing a street party menu, thinking about rationed food, making bunting and cucumber sandwiches,  finding out about child evacuees and deciding what to put in their suitcases, writing the front cover of a newspaper to announce the end of the war, sequencing a timeline of the events of the war and writing letters to a veteran.

The day was made even more memorable as Prep held their very own street party on the school field with delicious picnic food supplied by Thomas Franks. Picnic blankets were spread out and everyone enjoyed spending lunchtime together outside. Prep 6 played traditional games with the younger children and it was lovely to see everyone enjoying the celebrations.

We were also very lucky to welcome Mrs Mavis Woodridge into school who spoke to the children about her recollections of the war and VE Day. She spoke about the moment when her headmaster came to tell the children that war had been declared and they should all go home immediately. Mrs Woodridge shared her memories of rationing, carrying gas masks and living through the war with the children who all listened with interest…you could hear a pin drop! We would like to thank her for taking the time to come and share her knowledge with the children. It certainly brought their learning of this important occasion to life!
