School Trip Review: Pig Heart Boy at the Blackpool Grand Theatre

On Wednesday morning, Year 9 EPR students went to watch the powerful stage adaptation of Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman. The play, based on the popular novel, explores the emotional and ethical challenges faced by a teenage boy who undergoes a life-saving heart transplant—with a pig’s heart.

The play was brilliantly performed and packed with energy from the dynamic cast. The lead actor captured Cameron’s vulnerability, frustration and strength perfectly. The use of lighting and sound effects helped convey the tension and emotional weight of key scenes, particularly the moments of conflict between Cameron and his friends, as well as the public backlash his family faces. The themes of identity, science and friendship were explored in a sensitive and thought-provoking manner.

At the end of the performance, the cast and director took part in a Question and Answer session with the audience. They talked about their journey in becoming actors and also their beliefs regarding the ethics of organ donation and transplantation. These discussions will continue in our Year 9 EPR lessons!

The Pig Heart Boy is an excellent book to read for all students Year 7 and above, especially those who enjoy stories that make you think – and feel. There are several copies within the LRC – Mr Eldershaw will gladly direct you to one.
